Greetings from the PurplePatty.com Community! It all started in 1905 when Addis E. Hull purchased the Acme Pottery Company in Crooksville, Ohio and renamed it to the A.E. Hull Pottery Company. By the time 1917 came around, Hull had developed a line of art pottery for gift shops and florists.
In 1950 the company was destroyed by a flood and a fire. It took the company two years to rebuild and came back with a new name, Hull Pottery Company. With Hull always having a focus on the floral industry, they developed a new line of high gloss ceramics and the lines Floraline and Regal. When the 1960s arrived with California leading the way with popular ceramics, Hull started producing kitchen and dinner wares during this period with their popular lines called, Blue Belle, Mirror Brown, Rainbow, Provincial, and Heartland.
Hull's early stoneware is marked with an "H." The matte finished pieces contain pattern numbers. Series numbers identify the lines of Open Rose/Camillia (100s), Iris (400s), and Wildflower (W followed by number). Many Hull pieces that are marked with a number refer to the height of the piece. The high gloss Hull items made after 1950 usually feature the mark "hull" or "Hull" written in a script signature. The Hull Pottery Company closed its doors in 1985.
